Goal Type:

Half Marathon Finish

Running Accomplishments:

My personal best running record was when I was 24.  I was engaged, but didn't fit in my wedding dress.  Running several days per week altered me so that the dress could be worn without being let out.

Short-Term Running Goals:

Run a half-marathon with my sister.  (She doesn't know it yet.) I will have to run fast to keep up with that lucky skunk.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Learn to love running.  If that happens, then I may want to run a marathon someday.

Personal:

Married.  One supportive husband, four beautiful daughters and one busy son.

Last night I read something that said runners should strike on the ball of the foot, not the heal, so I started out this morning trying to do that.  It felt great!  I felt so fast.  I ran one mile using the ball-strike method, and then walked one mile.  I feel great.  It took me 30 minutes to do both miles.

While it is true that faster runners tend to strike with their forefoot I think what is often missed is that forefoot striking is a consequence of internal adaptations of the body that come as you get into better shape rather that the adaptations themselves. Forcing yourself to run of the forefoot when the body is not ready will only make you run faster than you should and get tired sooner than you would have with the strike that is currently natural at that same pace.

Also, there is a whole lot more to an efficient stride than the foot position when striking. In fact, so much more that this particular aspect is rather irrelevant. Some world-class runners are heel strikers. Some very far away from world class are forefoot strikers. It is possible to touch with a smooth stroke while heel striking, and it is also possible (and actually very easy) to stomp like an elephant while forefoot striking.

So, to make long story short. Run a lot of miles, and your feet will learn what they should the best they can. Do not worry about the fine details.

I read your bio and I guess we both better start running a lot more if we intend to do a half together. It's good to know about form both from your note and Sasha's. I'll have to pay more attention to it.

Hey, welcome to the blog - there aren't many of us Texans here. Good luck with your goals, it's helped me a lot to get the advice from the blog, and get in the habit of logging and blogging miles. My wife and I are doing our first half marathon in Oklahoma City in a couple months. Again, good luck!

Welcome to the blog!! Another wonderful running mother of 5!! YEAH!!

Best of luck to you with your goals. I love that your fastest experiences were to lose weight for that wedding dress!! What half marathon are you two thinking of running? I can think of nothing better than running with your sister, in fact, I keep trying to convince my sister she can do more than a mile!

I hope you learn to love running!

Ha! When I read Lucky Skunk in your bio I wondered...

I agree with Sasha. Just build up your miles. You'll be surprised at how soon you'll be able to run 13.1 without stopping.

ELISSE!!! WAHOO! You're running and blogging about it! Aaron and I are invititing ourselves to run a half marathon with you and Ash too! Just name the date, we'll be there. We just need to recruit Emily, Dawn, and Nathan and we can have the whole Kennard family blogging on here! Maybe we should send out an invite on the family email. :)

P.S. Watch out for that Burt. "He's crasy."

I resemble that remark.
